Who We Are

Built From Nothing.
Built to Last Forever.

In the winter of 1978, a retired naval engineer named Heinrich Weber leased a modest dry dock on the southern bank of the Elbe River in Hamburg with twelve employees, a second-hand plasma cutter, and a belief that German precision could build the world's finest ships. He was right.

Forty-six years later, OceanForge operates a world-class 2.4km² waterfront facility — 40+ active production berths, 18 overhead cranes, 6 CNC plate-cutting halls, and a digital engineering centre housing 480 naval architects and marine engineers. We have delivered 847 vessels to clients in 45 nations, from Arctic research icebreakers to 400-metre ultra-large container ships.

Today, under the leadership of Capt. Hans-Georg Weber — Heinrich's son — OceanForge combines that founding spirit of uncompromising craft with AI-assisted production, digital twin technology, and the most rigorous quality system in European shipbuilding. We don't build ships. We build legacies.

What Drives Us

Mission, Vision & Values

Every vessel we build is guided by three principles that have never wavered since Heinrich Weber cut the first plate in 1978.

Our Mission

To engineer the world's most reliable, efficient, and technically advanced vessels — delivered on time, on budget, and built to perform beyond specification for the full lifespan of the ship. Every time. Without exception.

Our Vision

A global maritime industry where every vessel operates with zero net emissions, maximum efficiency, and total safety — powered by OceanForge technology, delivered ahead of IMO 2050 targets, and crewed by people who trust their ship completely.

Our Values

Precision — we tolerate no shortcuts. Integrity — we honour every commitment, written or spoken. Innovation — we invest 8% of annual revenue in R&D. Partnership — we measure success by our clients' operational outcomes, not our delivery date.

Our Journey

Milestones That Shaped an Industry

Forty-six years of decisions, builds, and breakthroughs — each one building on the last.

1978
OceanForge is Founded
Heinrich Weber leases a modest dry dock on the Elbe with 12 employees and one plasma cutter. First vessel — a 4,200 DWT coastal freighter — delivered to a Danish operator in November 1978.
1989
100th Vessel Delivered
OceanForge delivers its 100th vessel — a 28,000 DWT bulk carrier for a Greek shipping group — in a ceremony attended by Hamburg's mayor. The yard now employs 340 people.
1997
Offshore Division Opens
OceanForge opens a dedicated offshore engineering division — the first of its kind at a German commercial shipbuilder. First jack-up rig delivered to Statoil in 1999.
2008
LNG Specialisation
First LNG carrier delivered — a 138,000m³ membrane-tank vessel for a Qatari energy group. Triggers a decade of LNG investment that makes OceanForge Europe's leading LNG newbuilder.
2015
Digital Twin Platform
Dr. Ingrid Schreiber launches OceanForge's proprietary real-time digital twin platform — the world's first available to shipbuilding clients. Saves an average of €8M per large vessel build.
2020
Green Maritime Division
OceanForge establishes its Green Maritime Solutions division — wind-assist, methanol dual-fuel, and hydrogen-ready engineering under one roof. 78+ green vessels delivered by 2024.
2024
World's Best Shipbuilder — Fourth Time in Six Years
Named Shipbuilder of the Year at the Seatrade Maritime Awards, London. The NordGas Aurora LNG carrier, delivered February 2024, awarded the world's most technically advanced LNG newbuild of the year.

Our Commitments

How We Show Up Every Day

Safety First, Always

12 consecutive years without a major safety incident across our 3,200-strong workforce. Every employee — from naval architect to yard welder — is empowered to stop any operation they believe is unsafe. No exceptions. No hierarchy.

Sustainability Leadership

We've reduced yard emissions by 40% since 2018 — six years ahead of our own 2030 carbon-neutral target. Our Green Maritime division has delivered 78+ low-emission vessels and we invest 3% of revenue annually in green propulsion R&D.

Relentless Innovation

8% of annual revenue — approximately €140M — is reinvested in R&D each year. From AI production scheduling to digital twin platforms and hydrogen-ready hull designs, OceanForge innovations regularly become industry standards.

Our People, Our Ships

OceanForge employs 3,200+ people, 68% of whom have been with us for over 10 years. We run the largest maritime apprenticeship programme in Northern Europe — 240 new apprentices annually — because the future of shipbuilding is built on skilled hands.
